******DAYTONA BEACH JAZZ ESCAPE AT CITY ISLAND PARK, SEPT. 2-4
(Daytona Beach, FL) This Labor Day weekend, the Daytona Beach Symphony Society is unleashing “The Other Side of the Symphony Society” as it presents the first annual Daytona Beach Jazz Escape. Bring a chair to City Island Park, September 2 - 4, and relax to three days of smooth vibes from top international, national and local jazz artists.
The riverside festival opens Saturday, September 2 with vocalist Khani Cole, Walter Beasley, Spryo Gyra, and headliner Jean-Luc Ponty. Sunday is a full day and night of music, including guitarist Peter White and “The Queen of Blues” Koko Taylor and her Blues Machine. Monday brings Nestor Torres, Everette Harp, and Brian Culbertson featuring Eric Darius on sax. Several local jazz artists will also perform during the weekend event.
“We are thrilled to bring such fabulous musicians to Daytona Beach,” says Carol Anderson, Managing Director of the Daytona Beach Symphony Society. “Jazz lovers from around the country are already calling us. We expect the Daytona Beach Jazz Escape to draw fans from far and wide.”

The Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens, 78 E. Granada Blvd. will
host Summer Impressions: The Vivid, The Serene and The Enlightening from
July 14 - September 1, 2006. It will feature select work from Very
Special Arts of Volusia County as well as a vibrant and detailed group of quilts on loan from the Atlantic Center for the Arts at Harris House. Augmenting the two exhibitions will be specific pieces from three Ormond Memorial Art Musuem teaching staff; Linda King, Karlene McConnell and Regina Stengel and small representation from the museum ArtReach summer camp.
Upcoming educational offerings at the museum include a two-day Mosaic
Workshop instructed by South Carolina Artist Lee Malerich. The recipient of numerous grants and fellowships and an MFA graduate of Northern Illinois University, Malerich's work is shown and collected extensively. She will be in the area participating in a project at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens to create a childrens sculptural art space in the current garden. The permanent exterior art and it's surrounding landscaping will be constucted in memorium to a long time museum friend and supporter Mrs. Sandry Baird of Ormond Beach.

The fine art exhibit "Seeing Red will open to the public July 7th with a lively receptions in the museum Main Gallery beginning at 6:00p.m. with live music and refreshments. Seeing Red is a one woman show featuring the contemporary works of Donne Bitner. Visitors can expect to see emotive and highly charged works of art. Judges comment that, "Donne Bitner's work is complex. The images are layered with textures give her works a unique voice which makes its own statement. This subtle quality is reflected not only in the chosen work but also in all the works in her booth. Her visual strength is beautifully connected to the best of contemporary art." Donne Bitner is a Senior Painting Instructor for Crealde. Donne graduated with honors from Penn State University with a degree in Art and has been a full-time studio artist for the last 15 years. In addition to teaching classes in watercolor, monotypes, and experimental acrylics at Crealdé, she maintains a studio at McRae Art Studio in Winter Park. Her work is exhibited in museum shows and art festivals throughout the United States and has appeared in publications including American Artist Watercolor Magazine, International Artist, and Watercolor Magic.
You can see her artwork in the collections of the Huntsville Museum of Art, Springfield Art Museum, Gulf Coast Center for the Arts, Vero Beach Center for the Arts, Daytona Beach Museum of Arts and Sciences, Maitland Museum of Art, Rollins College, State of Florida Capital Collection and the cities of Atlanta, Orlando, and Melbourne.
She is a signature member of both the National Watercolor Society and Florida Watercolor Society, a member of the Watercolor USA Honor Society, and a recipient of a Florida Individual Artist's Fellowship in 2002
Artist's Statement: "My new body of work incorporates monotypes, oil pastel, oil stick, charcoal, and acrylic paint. Although subject matter will vary, my intent is to follow the mark - to layer and strip away and find the hidden texture and meaning of a piece. It's painting by discovery."

The Daytona Playhouse The coming season's offerings have been
carefully selected to bring fresh work and sure-fire entertainment to
our patrons, young and old alike.
The season will be kicked off by "Enchanted April" in September,
followed by Neil Simon's "Jake's Women", "What's Wrong With This Picture",
"Little Lies", the riotous musical "Lucky Stiff", and , to close the
season, "The Smell of the Kill". The preview admission is only $5 and
refreshments will be served.
Season tickets for all six shows are an amazingly mere $65 and can be

Individual Artist Professional Development Grant Program Volusia County
The Cultural Council of Volusia County is offering a new financial assistance program for individual working artists. The Individual Artist Professional Development Grant Program is designed to assist practicing, professional artists residing in Volusia County. The program provides support for visual, performing and literary artists to take advantage of specific, professional development, skill-building opportunities to advance their work and careers. Grants are available in the amount of $500, $1,000 and $2,500 depending on the opportunity.
Two public workshops explaining the program in detail will be held.
The first is scheduled for Wednesday, September 13 from 2 – 4 p.m. in Training Rooms #1 and #2 of the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Building at 123 W. Indiana Avenue in DeLand.
The second will be held on Friday, September 15 at the Brannon Center, 105 S. Riverside Drive, New Smyrna Beach from 2 – 4 p.m Awards will be made in November 2006 with funds disbursed after December 1, 2006. Approximately 10 antiques experts will be on-hand to help you determine the value of your unique treasures. Specialties include jewelry, paintings, crystal, china, books, general antiques and more (no large furniture, please).
“Many people enjoy collecting, but would like to know more about what they have. We’re hoping they come and find out,” said Jane Robinson, Trust board member and co-chair of the event.
Admission to the event is free. Verbal antique evaluations are $10 each for non-members of the Trust, $5 for members; there is a limit of four items per person. Lunch will be available for a minimal charge. Proceeds benefit the Ormond Beach Historical Trust, which endeavors to collect, preserve, and share the history of Ormond Beach.
The Ormond Beach Historical Trust office is located at the MacDonald House Welcome Center, 38 E. Granada Boulevard, Ormond Beach. The Welcome Center is open Tuesday-Friday, 8:30am-1:30pm, and Saturday 10am-4pm. Visitors may view a 20-minute video summarizing the history of the Ormond Beach area as well as a display of historical items including artifacts from the historic Hotel Ormond. For 20 years just the mention of his name filled concert halls and outdoor arenas, as thousands would go home feeling really good. Arthur Fiedler, the boundary-stretching founder of the Boston Pops, introduced millions to orchestral music by playing what people were listening to.
Richard Hayman, the backbone of the Boston Pops arranging staff during Arthur Fiedler’s heyday, conducts a tribute to this perennial showman of music. A much-loved conductor of “Evening at Pops” on PBS, a Fiedler show was all about variety. Hayman leads the audience on a musical journey – from Broadway show tunes, to Duke Ellington, to The Beatles, to patriotic songs, to light Viennese classics. “We play all kinds of music,” Fiedler was fond of saying, “except the boring kind.”

2006-2007 SEASON
(Daytona Beach, FL) The Daytona Beach Symphony Society celebrates its
55th season with a diverse selection of programs - orchestral, dance,
opera and a premiere piano competition. International Series
subscriptions are now on sale and offer a savings of 20% off single ticket prices.
Orquestra De Sao Paulo performs the opening concert of the 2006-2007
Season on Friday, November 17, 8pm at Peabody Auditorium in Daytona
Beach. The Brazilian orchestra is conducted by John Neschling and cellist
Antonio Meneses is the soloist. The program includes Shostakovich's
Festival Overture, Op. 96, Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme,
Debussy's La Mer and Ginastera's Estancia: Ballet Suite.
The season continues with Daytona Winterfest 2007, a much-anticipated
event on the cultural scene. The seventh annual festival kicks off with
the Winterfest Gala on Friday, January 26 at the Shores Resort & Spa.
Saturday, January 27 the Hungarian Symphony Orchestra performs in
concert at Peabody Auditorium. András Ligeti conducts the orchestra's 100th
Anniversary Tour. The program includes Mussorgsky's A Night on Bald
Mountain, Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 2 in A Major with pianist Paavali
Jumppanen, and Dvorak's Symphony No. 8 in G Major, Op. 88. On Sunday,
January 27 festival-goers return to the Shores Resort & Spa for the
Winterfest Luncheon before heading over to Peabody Auditorium for a 3pm
performance of Puccini's Turandot. Set in Peking's Forbidden City, Puccini's
final masterpiece is a Chinese fairytale of epic proportions. Teatro
Lirico D'Europa performs with full orchestra and English super titles.
Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra return to
Daytona Beach on Friday, February 9, 8pm at Peabody Auditorium. Lockhart
leads the orchestra in a concert of popular music that is sure to be
another sell-out. The Boston Pops concert is not included in the
International Series season subscription. However, as a special
benefit, season subscribers may purchase advance single tickets to the Boston
Pops concert. Available single tickets will go on sale August 7, 2006.
The dynamic Ailey II dance company takes the Peabody Auditorium stage
on Saturday, February 10, 2007 at 8pm. Under the artistic direction of
Sylvia Waters, Ailey II is an exceptional company that merges the spirit
and energy of the country's best young dance talent with the passion
and creative vision of today's most outstanding emerging choreographers.
It has become one of the most popular dance companies in the United
States.
Next on the season schedule is the inaugural Rolf and Brigitte Gardey
2007 Piano Competition. Working in collaboration with the Jacksonville
Symphony Orchestra, the biennial event is modeled after the Van Cliburn
Piano Competition. Open to outstanding young pianists, ages 18 - 32,
the week-long competition features three elimination rounds. The three
finalists perform with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra on Sunday,
March 25, 3pm at Peabody Auditorium and the winner is selected. With
national exposure and $27,500 in prizes at stake, the competition is truly a
career-building opportunity for these gifted musicians.
Renowned pianist and Van Cliburn winner Olga Kern joins the National
Philharmonic of Russia in concert on Friday, April 6, 8 pm at Peabody
Auditorium. Vladimir Spivakov conducts a program that features two works
by Shostakovich, including the composer's Symphony No. 5, and
Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.
The Daytona Beach Symphony Society's season comes to an exhilarating
conclusion with the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble on Wednesday, April 11,
2007 at 8pm, Peabody Auditorium. The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble is
regarded as one of the greatest folkloric dance ensembles in the world.
The choreographies are all based on authentic dances, some of them
collected in isolated villages with dance elements dating back hundreds of
years. The members of the Folk Orchestra play authentic, traditional
instruments and perform Hungarian Folk music at its highest artistic
level. The Ensemble has performed in 44 countries across four continents.
The Daytona Beach Symphony Society's International Series subscriptions

Florida's hometown heroes in honor of the 5th anniversary of 9/11 at
PROTECT & SERVE, their next roller derby bout on Sunday, September 10,

personnel, as well as members of the military and their families, will

The Reconnaissance Rollers team will host the Furious Felons for this

PUBLIC CAN VIEW ARTISTS IN ACTION SEPTEMBER 8-10 AT DEBARY HALL;
EXHIBIT SEPTEMBER 15-30
Some of Central Florida's most talented outdoor painters, or 'Plein air
artists', will bring their paint boxes and easels to DeBary Hall
September 8 - 10 as the historic site participates in the fourth annual
'World Wide Paint Out' for the first time.
The artists will converge on DeBary Hall and paint outdoors throughout
DeBary. The public will be able to watch individual artists work 9 a.m.
- 3 p.m. each of the three days. Registration remains open for artists,
who should reserve space by calling DeBary Hall at (386) 668-3840 or

Plein air artwork will be on display at DeBary Hall Friday, September
15 - 30. A free wine and cheese reception from September 15, 5 - 7 p.m.,
will celebrate the new exhibit.
DeBary Hall was selected in part because of its Victorian Florida
buildings, such as the mansion, barn and ice house.
The event is supported by International Plein Air Painters, the DeBary
Art League, the National Women in the Arts and Group of 8.
Plein air artists seek the quality of natural light and atmosphere
outdoors, according to Marjorie Crain, a Plein Air artist, and they use a
variety of media, such as oils, watercolors and pastels.
"Art adds to a community and attracts a core of people who are
intelligent, creative and bring new ideas," said Crain. Crain is a member of
International Plein Air Painters, a worldwide artist organization.
DeBary Hall is open Tuesday - Saturday, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and
Sunday, noon - 4 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for ages 5 - 12 and
free for youth under five.
Built in 1871 by Frederick DeBary, a New York wine merchant, DeBary
Hall is on the National Historic Register of Homes and is owned by the
state and managed by the Leisure Services Division of Volusia County. It
was a hunting retreat of a famous wine merchant, Frederick deBary, owner
of holdings along the St. Johns River. Most of the historic material in
DeBary Hall focuses on St. Johns River history. One of the rooms
contains an award-winning interactive exhibit.

The International Plein Air Painters has awarded Barbara Perrotti
Signature Status. Last year Barbara was chosen as the SE Ambassador to
IPAP and she would like to encourage visual artists to join the 4th
Annual World Wide Paint- Out by signing up with IPAP through their official

The Little Theatre of New Smyrna Beach, 726 Third Avenue, Beachside, plans a whole new set of theater education classes for all ages beginning September 6.
WonderLand Theatre, the youth theater program, will have classes on Wednesdays, (Early Release Days), with fall, winter and spring sessions. Three classes will be held each Wednesday afternoon: Primary for ages 5-7, Intermediate for ages 8-10, and Middle School for ages 11-14. The fall and spring sessions are six weeks ($65) and the winter is four weeks ($50). Taught by experienced youth teachers, the classes will teach each age group how to develop their own creative talents.
Additional fee workshops will be held in Monster Makeup for ages 11-14, Diction/Projection for ages 11-14 and adults, and Dance for Musical Theater for teenagers and adults.
The adult program classes are on Saturdays and include Basic Acting, Directing, Stage Managing, Costumes/Props, and Lights/ Sound. Acting and Directing are fee classes and run 4-5 weeks and the remaining classes are one-day workshops and are free.

Barbara Sorenson's sculptures vary in size, but ‘feel’ massive. Her stone-like ceramics look like natural formations, but upon closer inspection have a distinctly female form. The curvaceous shapes of some sculptures allude to the priestesses of classic temples with a seductive arm or breast ‘appearing’ behind the ridged clay that covers these abstracted, yet ‘classical’ bodies.

Richard Currier “Simple Complexity� April 20 to May 25, 2007
“I paint until the objects become more than what they are,� says Richard Currier. Indeed, his over-sized canvases exhibit a “simple complexity" in which a watermelon sitting on a table becomes much more than a simple piece of fruit. Educated at the Ringling School of Art, Currier has exhibited extensively and is honored to be in several museums and prestigious collections.

For three years Ken Light photographed the death of the coal industry
and its culture in the struggling mining communities and former coal
company towns of West Virginia. Extreme poverty, welfare dependence, major
diseases like “black lung”; a sense of hopelessness about lost jobs and

is the first complete showing of the Coal Hollow exhibition, with more
than seventy of Ken Light’s powerful photographs presented with

ABOUT THE CREATORS OF COAL HOLLOW
Ken Light is a social documentary photographer whose work has appeared
in books, magazines and exhibitions. He is the author of Delta Time
(Smithsonian Institution Press 1995) and Texas Death Row (University Press
of Mississippi 1997). To The Promised Land (Aperture 1988); With These
Hands (Pilgrim Press 1986); and In the Fields (Harvest Press 1982),
examine the lives of farm workers and their journey from Mexico illegally
to the United States. Witness In Our Time: The Lives of Social
Documentary Photographers was released by the Smithsonian Institution Press in
October 2000. Ken Light has exhibited internationally in over 120
one-person and group shows and is part of numerous collections including the
San Francisco MOMA, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the International
Center of Photography and the American Museum of Art at the
Smithsonian. He has received two National Endowment for the Arts Photographers
Fellowships, the Dorothea Lange Fellowship and a fellowship from the Erna
and Victor Hasselblad Foundation.
Ken Light’s photographs have been published in Granta, Time, Newsweek,
Fortune, Mother Jones, The National Journal, Speak, L'Internazionale,
Camera Arts and other magazines. He is a Professor and Director of the
Center for Photography at the Graduate School of Journalism at the
University of California, Berkeley. With Melanie Light he is the founder of
the International Fund for Documentary Photography and Fotovision.

Set in Edwardian England. The play follows the exploits of Aeneas Posket, Chief Magistrate of Mulberry Street Police court, as he sets forth upon an illicit nocturnal visit with his stepson Cis to the infamous Hotel des Princes, run by the outrageous Madame Blonde. Unknown to him his young wife Agatha also happens secretly, but for different reasons, to be dining there. The consequences for this incorruptible pillar of Victorian society turn out to be both embarrassing and hilarious.

The Cultural Council of Volusia County is offering a new financial assistance program for individual working artists. The Individual Artist Professional Development Grant Program is designed to assist practicing, professional artists residing in Volusia County. The program provides support for visual, performing and literary artists to take advantage of specific, professional development, skill-building opportunities to advance their work and careers. Grants are available in the amount of $500, $1,000 and $2,500 depending on the opportunity.
Two public workshops explaining the program in detail will be held.
The first is scheduled for Wednesday, September 13 from 2 – 4 p.m. in Training Rooms #1 and #2 of the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Building at 123 W. Indiana Avenue in DeLand.
The second will be held on Friday, September 15 at the Brannon Center, 105 S. Riverside Drive, New Smyrna Beach from 2 – 4 p.m Awards will be made in November 2006 with funds disbursed after December 1, 2006. DeLand Theatre Festival 2007
DELAND, FLORIDA - Sands Theater Center has their hands full with 232 submissions for the first annual DeLand Theatre Festival slated to run January 19-28, 2007. Submissions have arrived from writers throughout the United States, as far west as California and Washington and as far north as Maine.
Leading the team of judges are Festival Producer Jeffrey Ault, a resident of Orange City, and Deltona resident Gary Norris, the Festival Coordinator. The team also includes Associate Producer Stephen Wilber of Los Angeles, Al Valletta of San Diego, and Stewart Zully of New York. Both Zully and Valletta will also direct plays for the Festival. Rounding out the team are Sands Theater Center business manager Jenny Barbieri and Storybook Artistic Director Darlene Stewart. Final selections will be announced the first week of September.
The submissions represent a variety of drama, comedy, musicals and satire covering an array of subject matter. There will be eight to eleven One Act scripts selected for production, depending on the length of the shows. In addition, four full-length plays will be chosen for a staged reading competition. The Festival staff will select one of those scripts for a full production in the 2007-2008 season.
The DeLand Theatre Festival 2007 will be a 10-day celebration of theatrical presentations, showcasing original plays and bringing together an impressive array of artists. The festival will offer seminars for aspiring actors along with advanced workshops for the experienced actor.
Festival performances will take place on both the Sands Theater Center Main Stage and in the Black Box Theater.
The DeLand Theatre Festival 2007 is expected to draw audiences from throughout Central Florida and set the stage for future festivals in the historic 1921 Athens Theatre upon completion of its renovation.

The Ocoee Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is looking for artists interested in attending the first Ocoee Founders’ Day Fine Arts Show on October 20-21, 2006 on the grounds of City Hall in front of Starke Lake. The art show will be viewed during the largest celebration the city offers, where over 30,000 people attended last year.
The City of Ocoee Founder’s Day Festival starts at 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Friday night with entertainment featuring Herb Williams, The Drifters and The Marvelettes. On Saturday it begins with a 9:00 a.m. parade and continues with a fishing event, historical exhibits, art and craft vendors, rides, food and now the fine art show. The entertainment through the day and into the evening includes Ronnie Milsap, Cletus T. Judd, Danielle Peck, Jamie Johnson, Jim Van Fleet and The Reign along with many local acts. It ends with fireworks at 9:00 p.m.

About the Program: Lake Garda in October is one of the most tranquil and contemplative spots in Italy. The tourists are gone, the weather is still fine and the little towns along the shore are quiet. This is a perfect setting to explore painting or experiment with photography; to get down to the writing you have been meaning to do for so long. These 3 concurrent workshops each begin the first night in Milan together. Then we travel to the town of Gargnano along the lake to the peaceful monastery of San Tomaso where the workshop activities will take place. San Tomaso is on a hill overlooking the lake and two small towns, both within walking distance. Although each program is separate, there will be several opportunities to overlap and share work. Photography & Polaroid Transfers: interact with the lake, its water and light, its surrounding architecture, marinas, hidden gardens, nature paths and café tables. We will work toward a personal vision to create artistic, meaningful and provocative imagery with color slide film. Lectures, slide shows, excursions, demonstrations and critiques will expand upon the technical and aesthetic possibilities of photography. At the end of the week there will be the option to create Polacolor Image transfers and emulsion lifts from selected shots.
Anna Tomczak teaches workshops in Florida and various university, museum, and studio classrooms throughout the US, Italy and Spain. SANDS THEATER CENTER ANNOUNCES AUDITIONS FOR
THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR OF STORYBOOK THEATER COMPANY
Storybook Theater Company, a division of the Sands Theater Center, will be holding auditions for its 25th Anniversary Touring season Monday, July 31st and Tuesday, August 1 at 10 AM at the theater at 600 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand, FL. Individuals auditioning
need to be available during DAYTIME HOURS to tour to the schools. The
company will be performing three shows in repertory from the end of
September 2006 thru May 2007. The three shows are “The Emperor’s New
Clothes,” “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi,” and “The Mark Twain Show.” Actors may be
cast in one or more shows, and actors are needed to be cast as
alternates as well. Rehearsals are unpaid and actors will receive a stipend for each performance. Auditions will consist of cold readings and movement exercises. Attendance at both sessions is encouraged, but not necessary to be cast.
Storybook actors will also be performing for the general public at the
theater: “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” Oct. 14 & 15, 2006;

Friday, July 21 was the qualifying deadline for all statewide
candidates for the primary and general elections in Florida. The fall
campaign and election cycle has officially begun.
AWE was created as a mechanism to allow Fine Arts Education supporters
to participate in the election cycle by making campaign contributions
to individual candidates. As you may know, none of the fine arts
education associations (Florida Music Educators' Association, Florida
Art Education Association, Florida School Music Association, Florida
Alliance for Arts Education, etc) are able to participate directly
because of IRS regulations on not-for-profit organizations. Because of
the advice of several arts-friendly elected officials pointing out this
as a deficiency in our lobbying efforts, AWE was created to be separate
from those groups.
The mission of AWE is very narrow and focused only on Fine Arts
Education issues. Contributions to political campaigns will be based on
two criteria:
* Is the candidate friendly towards arts-education issues?
* Is the candidate in a position to influence arts-education issues (by
virtue of a committee chair or committee position)?
Your support is essential! The only way AWE can fund contributions to
political campaigns, an effort to exert greater awareness of arts
education issues, is through individual donations.
If you have put off making your donation -- NOW is the time!
Your contribution of $25 or more will help us create a stronger
awareness and knowledge of issues that directly affect your classrooms.
Please send in your contribution TODAY, so that the voice of fine arts
education can be stronger.

(Daytona Beach, FL) This Labor Day weekend, the Daytona Beach Symphony Society is unleashing “The Other Side of the Symphony Society” as it presents the first annual Daytona Beach Jazz Escape. Bring a chair to City Island Park, September 2 - 4, and relax to three days of smooth vibes from top international, national and local jazz artists.
The riverside festival opens Saturday, September 2 with vocalist Khani Cole, Walter Beasley, Spryo Gyra, and headliner Jean-Luc Ponty. Sunday is a full day and night of music, including guitarist Peter White and “The Queen of Blues” Koko Taylor and her Blues Machine. Monday brings Nestor Torres, Everette Harp, and Brian Culbertson featuring Eric Darius on sax. Several local jazz artists will also perform during the weekend event.
“We are thrilled to bring such fabulous musicians to Daytona Beach,” says Carol Anderson, Managing Director of the Daytona Beach Symphony Society. “Jazz lovers from around the country are already calling us. We expect the Daytona Beach Jazz Escape to draw fans from far and wide.”

The Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens, 78 E. Granada Blvd. will
host Summer Impressions: The Vivid, The Serene and The Enlightening from
July 14 - September 1, 2006. It will feature select work from Very
Special Arts of Volusia County as well as a vibrant and detailed group of quilts on loan from the Atlantic Center for the Arts at Harris House. Augmenting the two exhibitions will be specific pieces from three Ormond Memorial Art Musuem teaching staff; Linda King, Karlene McConnell and Regina Stengel and small representation from the museum ArtReach summer camp.
Upcoming educational offerings at the museum include a two-day Mosaic
Workshop instructed by South Carolina Artist Lee Malerich. The recipient of numerous grants and fellowships and an MFA graduate of Northern Illinois University, Malerich's work is shown and collected extensively. She will be in the area participating in a project at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens to create a childrens sculptural art space in the current garden. The permanent exterior art and it's surrounding landscaping will be constucted in memorium to a long time museum friend and supporter Mrs. Sandry Baird of Ormond Beach.

The fine art exhibit "Seeing Red will open to the public July 7th with a lively receptions in the museum Main Gallery beginning at 6:00p.m. with live music and refreshments. Seeing Red is a one woman show featuring the contemporary works of Donne Bitner. Visitors can expect to see emotive and highly charged works of art. Judges comment that, "Donne Bitner's work is complex. The images are layered with textures give her works a unique voice which makes its own statement. This subtle quality is reflected not only in the chosen work but also in all the works in her booth. Her visual strength is beautifully connected to the best of contemporary art." Donne Bitner is a Senior Painting Instructor for Crealde. Donne graduated with honors from Penn State University with a degree in Art and has been a full-time studio artist for the last 15 years. In addition to teaching classes in watercolor, monotypes, and experimental acrylics at Crealdé, she maintains a studio at McRae Art Studio in Winter Park. Her work is exhibited in museum shows and art festivals throughout the United States and has appeared in publications including American Artist Watercolor Magazine, International Artist, and Watercolor Magic.
You can see her artwork in the collections of the Huntsville Museum of Art, Springfield Art Museum, Gulf Coast Center for the Arts, Vero Beach Center for the Arts, Daytona Beach Museum of Arts and Sciences, Maitland Museum of Art, Rollins College, State of Florida Capital Collection and the cities of Atlanta, Orlando, and Melbourne.
She is a signature member of both the National Watercolor Society and Florida Watercolor Society, a member of the Watercolor USA Honor Society, and a recipient of a Florida Individual Artist's Fellowship in 2002
Artist's Statement: "My new body of work incorporates monotypes, oil pastel, oil stick, charcoal, and acrylic paint. Although subject matter will vary, my intent is to follow the mark - to layer and strip away and find the hidden texture and meaning of a piece. It's painting by discovery."

carefully selected to bring fresh work and sure-fire entertainment to
our patrons, young and old alike.
The season will be kicked off by "Enchanted April" in September,
followed by Neil Simon's "Jake's Women", "What's Wrong With This Picture",
"Little Lies", the riotous musical "Lucky Stiff", and , to close the
season, "The Smell of the Kill". The preview admission is only $5 and
refreshments will be served.

(Daytona Beach, FL) This Labor Day weekend, the Daytona Beach Symphony Society is unleashing “The Other Side of the Symphony Society” as it presents the first annual Daytona Beach Jazz Escape. Bring a chair to City Island Park, September 2 - 4, and relax to three days of smooth vibes from top international, national and local jazz artists.
The riverside festival opens Saturday, September 2 with vocalist Khani Cole, Walter Beasley, Spryo Gyra, and headliner Jean-Luc Ponty. Sunday is a full day and night of music, including guitarist Peter White and “The Queen of Blues” Koko Taylor and her Blues Machine. Monday brings Nestor Torres, Everette Harp, and Brian Culbertson featuring Eric Darius on sax. Several local jazz artists will also perform during the weekend event.

Individual Artist Professional Development Grant Program Volusia County
The Cultural Council of Volusia County is offering a new financial assistance program for individual working artists. The Individual Artist Professional Development Grant Program is designed to assist practicing, professional artists residing in Volusia County. The program provides support for visual, performing and literary artists to take advantage of specific, professional development, skill-building opportunities to advance their work and careers. Grants are available in the amount of $500, $1,000 and $2,500 depending on the opportunity.
Two public workshops explaining the program in detail will be held.
The first is scheduled for Wednesday, September 13 from 2 – 4 p.m. in Training Rooms #1 and #2 of the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Building at 123 W. Indiana Avenue in DeLand.
The second will be held on Friday, September 15 at the Brannon Center, 105 S. Riverside Drive, New Smyrna Beach from 2 – 4 p.m Awards will be made in November 2006 with funds disbursed after December 1, 2006. Find out at the Ormond Beach Historical Trust’s Antique Appraisal Event, Saturday, September 23, 2006, from 9:00am – 3:00pm, at the Anderson-Price Memorial Building (formerly the Woman’s Club), 42 North Beach Street, Ormond Beach.
Approximately 10 antiques experts will be on-hand to help you determine the value of your unique treasures. Specialties include jewelry, paintings, crystal, china, books, general antiques and more (no large furniture, please).
“Many people enjoy collecting, but would like to know more about what they have. We’re hoping they come and find out,” said Jane Robinson, Trust board member and co-chair of the event.
Admission to the event is free. Verbal antique evaluations are $10 each for non-members of the Trust, $5 for members; there is a limit of four items per person. Lunch will be available for a minimal charge. Proceeds benefit the Ormond Beach Historical Trust, which endeavors to collect, preserve, and share the history of Ormond Beach.
The Ormond Beach Historical Trust office is located at the MacDonald House Welcome Center, 38 E. Granada Boulevard, Ormond Beach. The Welcome Center is open Tuesday-Friday, 8:30am-1:30pm, and Saturday 10am-4pm. Visitors may view a 20-minute video summarizing the history of the Ormond Beach area as well as a display of historical items including artifacts from the historic Hotel Ormond. For 20 years just the mention of his name filled concert halls and outdoor arenas, as thousands would go home feeling really good. Arthur Fiedler, the boundary-stretching founder of the Boston Pops, introduced millions to orchestral music by playing what people were listening to.
Richard Hayman, the backbone of the Boston Pops arranging staff during Arthur Fiedler’s heyday, conducts a tribute to this perennial showman of music. A much-loved conductor of “Evening at Pops” on PBS, a Fiedler show was all about variety. Hayman leads the audience on a musical journey – from Broadway show tunes, to Duke Ellington, to The Beatles, to patriotic songs, to light Viennese classics. “We play all kinds of music,” Fiedler was fond of saying, “except the boring kind.”

2006-2007 SEASON
(Daytona Beach, FL) The Daytona Beach Symphony Society celebrates its
55th season with a diverse selection of programs - orchestral, dance,
opera and a premiere piano competition. International Series
subscriptions are now on sale and offer a savings of 20% off single ticket prices.
Orquestra De Sao Paulo performs the opening concert of the 2006-2007
Season on Friday, November 17, 8pm at Peabody Auditorium in Daytona
Beach. The Brazilian orchestra is conducted by John Neschling and cellist
Antonio Meneses is the soloist. The program includes Shostakovich's
Festival Overture, Op. 96, Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme,
Debussy's La Mer and Ginastera's Estancia: Ballet Suite.
The season continues with Daytona Winterfest 2007, a much-anticipated
event on the cultural scene. The seventh annual festival kicks off with
the Winterfest Gala on Friday, January 26 at the Shores Resort & Spa.
Saturday, January 27 the Hungarian Symphony Orchestra performs in
concert at Peabody Auditorium. András Ligeti conducts the orchestra's 100th
Anniversary Tour. The program includes Mussorgsky's A Night on Bald
Mountain, Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 2 in A Major with pianist Paavali
Jumppanen, and Dvorak's Symphony No. 8 in G Major, Op. 88. On Sunday,
January 27 festival-goers return to the Shores Resort & Spa for the
Winterfest Luncheon before heading over to Peabody Auditorium for a 3pm
performance of Puccini's Turandot. Set in Peking's Forbidden City, Puccini's
final masterpiece is a Chinese fairytale of epic proportions. Teatro
Lirico D'Europa performs with full orchestra and English super titles.
Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra return to
Daytona Beach on Friday, February 9, 8pm at Peabody Auditorium. Lockhart
leads the orchestra in a concert of popular music that is sure to be
another sell-out. The Boston Pops concert is not included in the
International Series season subscription. However, as a special
benefit, season subscribers may purchase advance single tickets to the Boston
Pops concert. Available single tickets will go on sale August 7, 2006.
The dynamic Ailey II dance company takes the Peabody Auditorium stage
on Saturday, February 10, 2007 at 8pm. Under the artistic direction of
Sylvia Waters, Ailey II is an exceptional company that merges the spirit
and energy of the country's best young dance talent with the passion
and creative vision of today's most outstanding emerging choreographers.
It has become one of the most popular dance companies in the United
States.
Next on the season schedule is the inaugural Rolf and Brigitte Gardey
2007 Piano Competition. Working in collaboration with the Jacksonville
Symphony Orchestra, the biennial event is modeled after the Van Cliburn
Piano Competition. Open to outstanding young pianists, ages 18 - 32,
the week-long competition features three elimination rounds. The three
finalists perform with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra on Sunday,
March 25, 3pm at Peabody Auditorium and the winner is selected. With
national exposure and $27,500 in prizes at stake, the competition is truly a
career-building opportunity for these gifted musicians.
Renowned pianist and Van Cliburn winner Olga Kern joins the National
Philharmonic of Russia in concert on Friday, April 6, 8 pm at Peabody
Auditorium. Vladimir Spivakov conducts a program that features two works
by Shostakovich, including the composer's Symphony No. 5, and
Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.
The Daytona Beach Symphony Society's season comes to an exhilarating
conclusion with the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble on Wednesday, April 11,
2007 at 8pm, Peabody Auditorium. The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble is
regarded as one of the greatest folkloric dance ensembles in the world.
The choreographies are all based on authentic dances, some of them
collected in isolated villages with dance elements dating back hundreds of
years. The members of the Folk Orchestra play authentic, traditional
instruments and perform Hungarian Folk music at its highest artistic
level. The Ensemble has performed in 44 countries across four continents.
The Daytona Beach Symphony Society's International Series subscriptions

Florida's hometown heroes in honor of the 5th anniversary of 9/11 at
PROTECT & SERVE, their next roller derby bout on Sunday, September 10,
7-9 PM at DeLand Skating Center. Police, firefighters, EMS and EMT
personnel, as well as members of the military and their families, will
be admitted to the bout for half-off the regular ticket price with
appropriate identification.
The Reconnaissance Rollers team will host the Furious Felons for this
bout and they have planned activities expressly to honor and entertain
the men and women who put their lives on the line daily, at home and
abroad. A pre-bout tailgate will begin the festivities at 5 PM and both
breaks between periods of play will feature patriotic musical and video
tributes, skating demonstrations and drawings for prizes.

PUBLIC CAN VIEW ARTISTS IN ACTION SEPTEMBER 8-10 AT DEBARY HALL;
EXHIBIT SEPTEMBER 15-30
Some of Central Florida's most talented outdoor painters, or 'Plein air
artists', will bring their paint boxes and easels to DeBary Hall
September 8 - 10 as the historic site participates in the fourth annual
'World Wide Paint Out' for the first time.
The artists will converge on DeBary Hall and paint outdoors throughout
DeBary. The public will be able to watch individual artists work 9 a.m.
- 3 p.m. each of the three days. Registration remains open for artists,
who should reserve space by calling DeBary Hall at (386) 668-3840 or
visiting www.i-p-a-p.com.
Plein air artwork will be on display at DeBary Hall Friday, September
15 - 30. A free wine and cheese reception from September 15, 5 - 7 p.m.,
will celebrate the new exhibit.
DeBary Hall was selected in part because of its Victorian Florida
buildings, such as the mansion, barn and ice house.
The event is supported by International Plein Air Painters, the DeBary
Art League, the National Women in the Arts and Group of 8.
Plein air artists seek the quality of natural light and atmosphere
outdoors, according to Marjorie Crain, a Plein Air artist, and they use a
variety of media, such as oils, watercolors and pastels.
"Art adds to a community and attracts a core of people who are
intelligent, creative and bring new ideas," said Crain. Crain is a member of
International Plein Air Painters, a worldwide artist organization.
DeBary Hall is open Tuesday - Saturday, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and
Sunday, noon - 4 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for ages 5 - 12 and
free for youth under five.

The International Plein Air Painters has awarded Barbara Perrotti
Signature Status. Last year Barbara was chosen as the SE Ambassador to
IPAP and she would like to encourage visual artists to join the 4th
Annual World Wide Paint- Out by signing up with IPAP through their official

The Little Theatre of New Smyrna Beach, 726 Third Avenue, Beachside, plans a whole new set of theater education classes for all ages beginning September 6.
WonderLand Theatre, the youth theater program, will have classes on Wednesdays, (Early Release Days), with fall, winter and spring sessions. Three classes will be held each Wednesday afternoon: Primary for ages 5-7, Intermediate for ages 8-10, and Middle School for ages 11-14. The fall and spring sessions are six weeks ($65) and the winter is four weeks ($50). Taught by experienced youth teachers, the classes will teach each age group how to develop their own creative talents.
Additional fee workshops will be held in Monster Makeup for ages 11-14, Diction/Projection for ages 11-14 and adults, and Dance for Musical Theater for teenagers and adults.
The adult program classes are on Saturdays and include Basic Acting, Directing, Stage Managing, Costumes/Props, and Lights/ Sound. Acting and Directing are fee classes and run 4-5 weeks and the remaining classes are one-day workshops and are free.

Barbara Sorenson's sculptures vary in size, but ‘feel’ massive. Her stone-like ceramics look like natural formations, but upon closer inspection have a distinctly female form. The curvaceous shapes of some sculptures allude to the priestesses of classic temples with a seductive arm or breast ‘appearing’ behind the ridged clay that covers these abstracted, yet ‘classical’ bodies.

Richard Currier “Simple Complexity� April 20 to May 25, 2007
“I paint until the objects become more than what they are,� says Richard Currier. Indeed, his over-sized canvases exhibit a “simple complexity" in which a watermelon sitting on a table becomes much more than a simple piece of fruit. Educated at the Ringling School of Art, Currier has exhibited extensively and is honored to be in several museums and prestigious collections.

and its culture in the struggling mining communities and former coal
company towns of West Virginia. Extreme poverty, welfare dependence, major
diseases like “black lung”; a sense of hopelessness about lost jobs and

is the first complete showing of the Coal Hollow exhibition, with more
than seventy of Ken Light’s powerful photographs presented with

ABOUT THE CREATORS OF COAL HOLLOW
Ken Light is a social documentary photographer whose work has appeared
in books, magazines and exhibitions. He is the author of Delta Time
(Smithsonian Institution Press 1995) and Texas Death Row (University Press
of Mississippi 1997). To The Promised Land (Aperture 1988); With These
Hands (Pilgrim Press 1986); and In the Fields (Harvest Press 1982),
examine the lives of farm workers and their journey from Mexico illegally
to the United States. Witness In Our Time: The Lives of Social
Documentary Photographers was released by the Smithsonian Institution Press in
October 2000. Ken Light has exhibited internationally in over 120
one-person and group shows and is part of numerous collections including the
San Francisco MOMA, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the International
Center of Photography and the American Museum of Art at the
Smithsonian. He has received two National Endowment for the Arts Photographers
Fellowships, the Dorothea Lange Fellowship and a fellowship from the Erna
and Victor Hasselblad Foundation.
Ken Light’s photographs have been published in Granta, Time, Newsweek,
Fortune, Mother Jones, The National Journal, Speak, L'Internazionale,
Camera Arts and other magazines. He is a Professor and Director of the
Center for Photography at the Graduate School of Journalism at the
University of California, Berkeley. With Melanie Light he is the founder of
the International Fund for Documentary Photography and Fotovision.

The Cultural Council of Volusia County is offering a new financial assistance program for individual working artists. The Individual Artist Professional Development Grant Program is designed to assist practicing, professional artists residing in Volusia County. The program provides support for visual, performing and literary artists to take advantage of specific, professional development, skill-building opportunities to advance their work and careers. Grants are available in the amount of $500, $1,000 and $2,500 depending on the opportunity.
Two public workshops explaining the program in detail will be held.
The first is scheduled for Wednesday, September 13 from 2 – 4 p.m. in Training Rooms #1 and #2 of the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Building at 123 W. Indiana Avenue in DeLand.
The second will be held on Friday, September 15 at the Brannon Center, 105 S. Riverside Drive, New Smyrna Beach from 2 – 4 p.m Awards will be made in November 2006 with funds disbursed after December 1, 2006. DeLand Theatre Festival 2007
DELAND, FLORIDA - Sands Theater Center has their hands full with 232 submissions for the first annual DeLand Theatre Festival slated to run January 19-28, 2007. Submissions have arrived from writers throughout the United States, as far west as California and Washington and as far north as Maine.
Leading the team of judges are Festival Producer Jeffrey Ault, a resident of Orange City, and Deltona resident Gary Norris, the Festival Coordinator. The team also includes Associate Producer Stephen Wilber of Los Angeles, Al Valletta of San Diego, and Stewart Zully of New York. Both Zully and Valletta will also direct plays for the Festival. Rounding out the team are Sands Theater Center business manager Jenny Barbieri and Storybook Artistic Director Darlene Stewart. Final selections will be announced the first week of September.
The submissions represent a variety of drama, comedy, musicals and satire covering an array of subject matter. There will be eight to eleven One Act scripts selected for production, depending on the length of the shows. In addition, four full-length plays will be chosen for a staged reading competition. The Festival staff will select one of those scripts for a full production in the 2007-2008 season.
The DeLand Theatre Festival 2007 will be a 10-day celebration of theatrical presentations, showcasing original plays and bringing together an impressive array of artists. The festival will offer seminars for aspiring actors along with advanced workshops for the experienced actor.
Festival performances will take place on both the Sands Theater Center Main Stage and in the Black Box Theater.
The DeLand Theatre Festival 2007 is expected to draw audiences from throughout Central Florida and set the stage for future festivals in the historic 1921 Athens Theatre upon completion of its renovation.

The Ocoee Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is looking for artists interested in attending the first Ocoee Founders’ Day Fine Arts Show on October 20-21, 2006 on the grounds of City Hall in front of Starke Lake. The art show will be viewed during the largest celebration the city offers, where over 30,000 people attended last year.
The City of Ocoee Founder’s Day Festival starts at 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Friday night with entertainment featuring Herb Williams, The Drifters and The Marvelettes. On Saturday it begins with a 9:00 a.m. parade and continues with a fishing event, historical exhibits, art and craft vendors, rides, food and now the fine art show. The entertainment through the day and into the evening includes Ronnie Milsap, Cletus T. Judd, Danielle Peck, Jamie Johnson, Jim Van Fleet and The Reign along with many local acts. It ends with fireworks at 9:00 p.m.

About the Program: Lake Garda in October is one of the most tranquil and contemplative spots in Italy. The tourists are gone, the weather is still fine and the little towns along the shore are quiet. This is a perfect setting to explore painting or experiment with photography; to get down to the writing you have been meaning to do for so long. These 3 concurrent workshops each begin the first night in Milan together. Then we travel to the town of Gargnano along the lake to the peaceful monastery of San Tomaso where the workshop activities will take place. San Tomaso is on a hill overlooking the lake and two small towns, both within walking distance. Although each program is separate, there will be several opportunities to overlap and share work. Photography & Polaroid Transfers: interact with the lake, its water and light, its surrounding architecture, marinas, hidden gardens, nature paths and café tables. Excursions to the nearby cities of Verona and/or Mantua will lead to other opportunities to see vivid colors and capture antiquity and artisan culture. We will work toward a personal vision to create artistic, meaningful and provocative imagery with color slide film. Lectures, slide shows, excursions, demonstrations and critiques will expand upon the technical and aesthetic possibilities of photography. At the end of the week there will be the option to create Polacolor Image transfers and emulsion lifts from selected shots.
Anna Tomczak teaches workshops in Florida and various university, museum, and studio classrooms throughout the US, Italy and Spain. Anna's photographs and work in alternative processes - Polaroid transfer and hand painted silver prints - has been widely exhibited in publications, museums and collections including The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Norton Museum of Art, Sony Latin-America, McGraw-Hill, NYC, and the Polaroid Corporate Art Collection, The Georgia Review and View Camera Magazine.

SANDS THEATER CENTER ANNOUNCES AUDITIONS FOR
THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR OF STORYBOOK THEATER COMPANY
Storybook Theater Company, a division of the Sands Theater Center, will be holding auditions for its 25th Anniversary Touring season Monday, July 31st and Tuesday, August 1 at 10 AM at the theater at 600 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand, FL. Individuals auditioning
need to be available during DAYTIME HOURS to tour to the schools. The
company will be performing three shows in repertory from the end of
September 2006 thru May 2007. The three shows are “The Emperor’s New
Clothes,” “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi,” and “The Mark Twain Show.” Actors may be
cast in one or more shows, and actors are needed to be cast as
alternates as well. Rehearsals are unpaid and actors will receive a stipend for each performance. Auditions will consist of cold readings and movement exercises. Attendance at both sessions is encouraged, but not necessary to be cast.
Storybook actors will also be performing for the general public at the
theater: “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” Oct. 14 & 15, 2006;

presentations.
Bachelors of Music degree and significant musical skills and technique

Friday, July 21 was the qualifying deadline for all statewide
candidates for the primary and general elections in Florida. The fall
campaign and election cycle has officially begun.
AWE was created as a mechanism to allow Fine Arts Education supporters
to participate in the election cycle by making campaign contributions
to individual candidates. As you may know, none of the fine arts
education associations (Florida Music Educators' Association, Florida
Art Education Association, Florida School Music Association, Florida
Alliance for Arts Education, etc) are able to participate directly
because of IRS regulations on not-for-profit organizations. Because of
the advice of several arts-friendly elected officials pointing out this
as a deficiency in our lobbying efforts, AWE was created to be separate
from those groups.
The mission of AWE is very narrow and focused only on Fine Arts
Education issues. Contributions to political campaigns will be based on
two criteria:
* Is the candidate friendly towards arts-education issues?
* Is the candidate in a position to influence arts-education issues (by
virtue of a committee chair or committee position)?
Your support is essential! The only way AWE can fund contributions to
political campaigns, an effort to exert greater awareness of arts
education issues, is through individual donations.
If you have put off making your donation -- NOW is the time!
Your contribution of $25 or more will help us create a stronger
awareness and knowledge of issues that directly affect your classrooms.
Please send in your contribution TODAY, so that the voice of fine arts
education can be stronger.
