Exhibition: The Lightness of Being – The Dance Photography of Lois GreenfieldCollaborating with some of the world's finest dancers from such illustrious dance companies as the Martha Graham Dance Company, Merce Cunningham, the Sydney Dance Company, Paul Taylor, Pilobolus, San Francisco Ballet, the Parsons Dance Company, and Ballet Tech, Lois Greenfield captures moments of startling grace and power. Her gravity-defying bodyscapes marked a new direction in dance photography. Lois Greenfield's revolutionary photographs capture the explosive energy and beauty of dancers' bodies in motion. THIS EMAIL IS BEST VIEWED IN HTML...ENABLE IN EMAIL PRESS RELEASEDaytona Beach, FL, September 11, 2006. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 15 to December 10, 2006 RESONATING FIELDSTHE PHOTOGRAPHY OF LOIS GREENFIELD EXHIBITION OPENING EVENTS ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 6:00 8:00PM 6:00 p.m. Preview Reception to meet Lois GreenfieldMuseum Galleries 7:00 p.m.Special Presentation by Lois GreenfieldJ.M. Goddard Theater, DBCC Daytona Campus In her exuberant, explosive and elegant pictures, Lois Greenfield captures in an image, not just the lithe and acrobatic forms of dancers performing their art, but the purity and exhilaration of movement itself. Dancers in Ms. Greenfields breathtaking images seem like a species apart; rare and wonderful creatures who have figured out how to break the bonds that hold the rest of us to earth. Without tricks or manipulation of any kind, she captures these fleeting and impossible moments in a style that is both lyrical and graphic. This exhibition brings together a definitive collection of her pioneering work in dance photography and encompasses incomparable images of the beauty and strength of the human body. Greenfield's work inspires us to re-evaluate how we see the world, and movement. Her unique approach to translating live movements and capturing the human form in motion has radically redefined the genre, reinvented the aesthetics of dance photography and influenced a generation of photographers. Lois has created signature images for virtually all of the major contemporary dance companies. Collaborating with some of the world's finest dancers from such illustrious dance companies as the Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Sydney Dance Company, Alvin Ailey, Paul Taylor and the San Francisco Ballet to the younger generations Twyla Tharp, Bill.T. Jones/Arnie Zane, Pilobolus and the Parsons Dance Company, Lois Greenfield captures moments of startling grace and power. William Ewing, who has written extensively about Greenfields photography for both of her monographs has interpreted the power of her work in terms of the tensions created between opposing forces: gravity and weightlessness, attraction and repulsion, serenity and strain, balance and imbalance, freedom and constraint, figuration and abstraction, order and chaos. Ewing further commented that Greenfield not only frees the dancer from the dance, but from the constraints of time and space as well, and even in a sense from their own bodies. Greenfields work has been compared with Eadward Muybridges landmark explorations of human locomotion and there are strong correspondences with the Decisive Moment of Henri Cartier-Bresson. But there is a paradox inherent in Greenfields work; these photographs depict actual occurrences in the world yet simultaneously they challenge credulity with what we see depicted within them. Greenfields images are more fully the product of her imagination and, as such have much in common with the imaginative work of the Surrealists. ABOUT LOIS GREENFIELDLois Greenfield started as a photojournalist in Boston in 1970. While covering the usual range of subjects, she got her first dance assignment. When she moved to New York City in 1973, she started specializing in dance photography and for twenty years she covered the experimental dance scene for the Village Voice. Early on she was drawn to the graphic potential of dance and In 1982, she decided to open a studio where she could not only control the lighting, but could also direct the dancers in her exploration of movements expressive potential. About her early work Lois has said People would look at one of my pictures of Baryshnikov in a spectacular leap ten feet off the ground and say, What a great photograph! but I knew it wasnt; it was merely a great dance moment competently captured. So I decided to be more exploratory." Two ground-breaking monographs of Greenfield's work have been published by Chronicle Books in the United States, and by Thames and Hudson in Europe. They are: Breaking Bounds (1992) and Airborne (1998). Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide and published in virtually every major magazine including Sports Illustrated, Time, Elle, Vogue, Life, and The New York Times Magazine. Commercial clients have adapted the metaphoric potential of her unique vision. Her commercial clients include Raymond Weil, Pepsi, DuPont, Cutty Sark, Disney, IBM and Capezio. Lois maintains a dynamic and busy commercial practice from her New York studio. The newest venture for Lois Greenfield has taken her career full circle. Collaborating and performing around the world with the Australian Dance Theater in "Held" a dance inspired by her photography, Lois shoots the live dance action as an integral part of the performance. OTHER EXHIBITION EVENTS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 186:00 p.m. Museum Open House Reception to meet dance historian Martha Ullman WestMuseum Galleries 7:00 p.m.Museum Lecture Series: Dance and Photography A History Martha Ullman WestBldg. 110, Rm.112, DBCC Daytona Campus ABOUT RESONATING FIELDSFor this exhibition the images are collected into galleries that move beyond any one fixed single image or instantaneous moment. Each gallery series becomes a resonant field of forms and figures, phrases, themes, rhymes and configurations with sections and movements intended to form shifting structures of concept and design. Within each series there are changes of scale, placement in sequence and configuration to create dynamic and very musical forms. The metaphoric potential generated for the viewer by each series is also inflected by the gallery title. Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra
“Arthur Fiedler Favorites”
Friday, September 29, 2006 at 7:30 p.m.
Peabody Auditorium, 600 Auditorium Blvd, Daytona Beach
Richard Hayman, guest conductor
For 20 years just the mention of his name filled concert halls and outdoor arenas, as thousands would go home feeling really good. Arthur Fiedler, the boundary-stretching founder of the Boston Pops, introduced millions to orchestral music by playing what people were listening to.
Richard Hayman, the backbone of the Boston Pops arranging staff during Arthur Fiedler’s heyday, conducts a tribute to this perennial showman of music. A much-loved conductor of “Evening at Pops” on PBS, a Fiedler show was all about variety. Hayman leads the audience on a musical journey – from Broadway show tunes, to Duke Ellington, to The Beatles, to patriotic songs, to light Viennese classics. “We play all kinds of music,” Fiedler was fond of saying, “except the boring kind.”
Ticket prices are $43, $33, $23 and $18, plus service charges. For information, call the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra box office at (904) 354-5547, toll free (877) 662-6731, or log on to jaxsymphony.org. Tickets are available at the Peabody Auditorium box office (600 Auditorium Blvd – Daytona Beach,) charge-by-phone at Ticket Master (407) 839-3900 or through www.ticketmaster.com.

Plein air artists seek the quality of natural light and atmosphere
outdoors, according to Marjorie Crain, a Plein Air artist, and they use a
variety of media, such as oils, watercolors and pastels.
"Art adds to a community and attracts a core of people who are
intelligent, creative and bring new ideas," said Crain. Crain is a member of
International Plein Air Painters, a worldwide artist organization.
DeBary Hall is open Tuesday - Saturday, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and
Sunday, noon - 4 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for ages 5 - 12 and

Barbara Sorenson March 9 to April 15, 2007
Barbara Sorenson's sculptures vary in size, but ‘feel’ massive. Her stone-like ceramics look like natural formations, but upon closer inspection have a distinctly female form. The curvaceous shapes of some sculptures allude to the priestesses of classic temples with a seductive arm or breast ‘appearing’ behind the ridged clay that covers these abstracted, yet ‘classical’ bodies.

_COAL HOLLOW
PHOTOGRAPHS BY KEN LIGHT
ORAL HISTORIES BY MELANIE LIGHT
EXHIBITION DATES: AUGUST 30 TO OCTOBER 29, 2006
EXHIBITION PREVIEW: Wednesday, AUGUST 30, 6:00 PM
“Photographer Ken Light and writer Melanie Light rivet readers'
attention on the landscape and lives of rural southern West Virginia in the
first years of the 21st century*Coal Hollow belongs in the pantheon of
great documentary projects of photo and text. The Lights succeed in
respecting their subjects, intruding on their lives just enough to render a
haunting profile of hardworking folks living on the margins." --Choice:
Current Reviews For Academic Libraries.
“The people in these photographs looked so poor that if I squinted my
eyes, they might have been in Africa or Peru. It seemed to me that life
had always been rough in Appalachia, but this degree of poverty was the
ugliest, toughest poverty I had ever seen. It was too hard”. Melanie
Light
"America's coal industry remains a laboratory test for 'free market'
capitalism and government's efforts to control it. The people who live in
it, as captured here in words and pictures by Ken and Melanie Light,
are obstinate, wounded, witty, profane, and defiantly human”-- John
Sayles
For three years Ken Light photographed the death of the coal industry
and its culture in the struggling mining communities and former coal
company towns of West Virginia. Extreme poverty, welfare dependence, major
diseases like “black lung”; a sense of hopelessness about lost jobs and
lost heritage is haunting the country’s most impoverished state. This
is the first complete showing of the Coal Hollow exhibition, with more
than seventy of Ken Light’s powerful photographs presented with
accompanying oral histories and text by Melanie Light.
"Coal Hollow presents a heartbreaking, visually arresting portrait of
Appalachia now that, as one resident puts it, 'the easy coal is gone.’”
--Dallas Morning News
“The idea is that this project is * about the human slag that is left
after the mechanization of coal. The real story is about the people,
their life and humanity*There was no coal tax, there was nothing left
behind; it was all literally and figuratively extracted from the region. So
that when, as all industries do, the coal industry moved through its
cycle, there was really nothing left behind.”-- Melanie Light

Camera Arts and other magazines. He is a Professor and Director of the
Center for Photography at the Graduate School of Journalism at the
University of California, Berkeley. With Melanie Light he is the founder of
the International Fund for Documentary Photography and Fotovision.
“The idea is that this project is * about the human slag that is left
after the mechanization of coal. The real story is about the people,
their life and humanity*There was no coal tax, there was nothing left
behind; it was all literally and figuratively extracted from the region. So
that when, as all industries do, the coal industry moved through its
cycle, there was really nothing left behind.”--Melanie Light
"Ken Light's haunting photographs*and Melanie Light's moving oral
histories . . . present a complex picture of the human suffering and
environmental costs of coal mining in America* This timely book, whose release
comes shortly after recent tragedies in which trapped coal miners have
lost their lives, examines the role of corporate greed as it has
affected once-proud people who live in dilapidated houses and trailers amid
denuded forests, abandoned strip mines and toxic slurry ponds. It does
so with dignity and respect for the people the Lights encountered on
their journey to 'Coal Hollow.'"--Sacramento Bee.

Extreme poverty, welfare dependence, major diseases like “black lung”; a sense of hopelessness about lost jobs and lost heritage is haunting the country’s most impoverished state.

Enchanted April
Matthew Barber,
from the novel by Elizabeth von Arnim
When two frustrated London housewives decide to rent a villa in Italy for a holiday away from their bleak marriages, they recruit two very different English women to share the cost and the experience. There, among the wisteria blossoms and Mediterranean sunshine, all four bloom again—rediscovering themselves in ways that they—and we—could never have anticipated
Performances, Sep. 8,9,10,14,15,16,17 ~ Auditions Jul. 30 & 31
Jake’s Women
Neil Simon
Jake, a novelist who is more successful with fiction that with life, faces a marital crisis by daydreaming about the women in his life. The wildly comic and sometimes moving flashbacks played in his mind are interrupted by visitations from actual females. A revered first wife who was killed years earlier in an accident, his daughter remembered as a child but now a young woman, his boisterous and bossy sister, an opinionated analyst, his current wife who is leaving Jake for another man, and a prospective third wife. Another classic Neil Simon comedy.
Performances, Oct. 20,21,22,26,27,28,29 ~ Auditions Sep10 & 11
What’s Wrong With This Picture
Donald Margulies
Opening at the end of shiva, this is the story of grief-stricken dry-cleaner Mort, whose wife, Shirley, died the week before, leaving a house in the middle of a redecorating project. His loving family is telling him 'enough already, it's time to live your life.' Once Mort is left uncomfortably alone with his teenage son, Artie, the play begins to take its odd turns and the sudden return of Shirley explodes everything. The play continues to take every unexpected path as the three try to cope with the situation and with the rest of the family.
Performances, Dec. 1,2,3,7,8,9,10 ~ Auditions Oct. 22 & 23
Little Lies
By Joseph George Caruso
Freely adapted from and inspired by
Sir Arthur Wing Pinero’s famous comedy “The Magistrate”
Set in Edwardian England. The play follows the exploits of Aeneas Posket, Chief Magistrate of Mulberry Street Police court, as he sets forth upon an illicit nocturnal visit with his stepson Cis to the infamous Hotel des Princes, run by the outrageous Madame Blonde. Unknown to him his young wife Agatha also happens secretly, but for different reasons, to be dining there. The consequences for this incorruptible pillar of Victorian society turn out to be both embarrassing and hilarious.
Performances Jan. 19,20,21,25,26,27,28 ~ Auditions Dec. 3 & 4
Lucky Stiff Book and lyrics by Lynn AhrensMusic by Stephen Flaherty
Lucky Stiff is a very funny musical murder mystery farce about an unassuming English shoe salesman forced to take the corpse of his recently-murdered Atlantic City casino manager uncle on a week-long vacation to Monte Carlo. Should he succeed, he stands to inherit $6,000,000. If not, the money goes to the Universal Dog Home of Brooklyn. Harry comes up against his uncle's insanely jealous and legally blind mistress, her optometrist brother and Annabel Glick, a zealous representative from the Universal Dog Home determined to see Harry's inheritance "go to the dogs."

Smell of the Kill
Michele Lowe
Three suburban housewives, loosely allied by their husband's common college bonding, are making the best of their relationships. We find, however, that what binds these ladies together is a variety of betrayals by their husbands. Nicky’s husband is facing a jail term for embezzling Molly desperately wants a baby but her husband, won't sleep with her and Debra harbors resentment of her husband’s infidelities. The fun begins when the men accidentally lock themselves into the new meat freezer in the basement, and the ladies must decide whether to let them out.

$130.00 members, $150.00 non-members
As Cedomir “Ched” Djordievski jokingly puts it, his claims to fame are
having been born on the same month and day as Michelagelo, and in the
same town * Skopje, Macedonia * as Mother Teresa. He could add that he
later occupied a studio in England that once belonged to sculptor Henry
Moore. But he has his own distinction. His striking sculptures of
ordinary, everyday objects are beautifully executed and enchanting in their
play on the familiar. Djordjievshi’s work is commissioned and
collected wordwide. As an incoming resident of Ormond Beach, FL, the Ormond
Memorial Art Museum and Gardens is delighted to unveil
this remarkable talent in it’s upcoming Figurative Exhibition, running
Monday * Friday 10:00 * 4:00 p.m. and Sat. & Sun. 12:00 * 4:00 p.m.,

About the Program: Lake Garda in October is one of the most tranquil and contemplative spots in Italy. The tourists are gone, the weather is still fine and the little towns along the shore are quiet. This is a perfect setting to explore painting or experiment with photography; to get down to the writing you have been meaning to do for so long. These 3 concurrent workshops each begin the first night in Milan together. Then we travel to the town of Gargnano along the lake to the peaceful monastery of San Tomaso where the workshop activities will take place. San Tomaso is on a hill overlooking the lake and two small towns, both within walking distance. Although each program is separate, there will be several opportunities to overlap and share work. For further information please log onto: HYPERLINK "http://www.ilchiostro.com/Garda.htm" www.ilchiostro.com/Garda.htm
Photography & Polaroid Transfers: interact with the lake, its water and light, its surrounding architecture, marinas, hidden gardens, nature paths and café tables. Excursions to the nearby cities of Verona and/or Mantua will lead to other opportunities to see vivid colors and capture antiquity and artisan culture. We will work toward a personal vision to create artistic, meaningful and provocative imagery with color slide film. Lectures, slide shows, excursions, demonstrations and critiques will expand upon the technical and aesthetic possibilities of photography. At the end of the week there will be the option to create Polacolor Image transfers and emulsion lifts from selected shots.
Anna Tomczak teaches workshops in Florida and various university, museum, and studio classrooms throughout the US, Italy and Spain. Anna's photographs and work in alternative processes - Polaroid transfer and hand painted silver prints - has been widely exhibited in publications, museums and collections including The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Norton Museum of Art, Sony Latin-America, McGraw-Hill, NYC, and the Polaroid Corporate Art Collection, The Georgia Review and View Camera Magazine.

Action Item: Support ArtWork in Education (AWE)
HYPERLINK "http://capwiz.com/flmusiced/utr/1/KVCAGEJLGY/FUGXGEJPLT/812248841%20" \t "_blank" http://capwiz.com/flmusiced/utr/1/KVCAGEJLGY/FUGXGEJPLT/812248841
Friday, July 21 was the qualifying deadline for all statewide
candidates for the primary and general elections in Florida. The fall
campaign and election cycle has officially begun.
AWE was created as a mechanism to allow Fine Arts Education supporters
to participate in the election cycle by making campaign contributions
to individual candidates. As you may know, none of the fine arts
education associations (Florida Music Educators' Association, Florida
Art Education Association, Florida School Music Association, Florida
Alliance for Arts Education, etc) are able to participate directly
because of IRS regulations on not-for-profit organizations. Because of
the advice of several arts-friendly elected officials pointing out this
as a deficiency in our lobbying efforts, AWE was created to be separate
from those groups.
The mission of AWE is very narrow and focused only on Fine Arts
Education issues. Contributions to political campaigns will be based on
two criteria:
* Is the candidate friendly towards arts-education issues?
* Is the candidate in a position to influence arts-education issues (by
virtue of a committee chair or committee position)?
Your support is essential! The only way AWE can fund contributions to
political campaigns, an effort to exert greater awareness of arts
education issues, is through individual donations.
If you have put off making your donation -- NOW is the time!
Your contribution of $25 or more will help us create a stronger
awareness and knowledge of issues that directly affect your classrooms.
Please send in your contribution TODAY, so that the voice of fine arts
education can be stronger.
You may fax or mail the form which can be found by using the link at
the top of this e-bulletin. Please be an active supporter of AWE and
distribute this message to anyone that may also wish to support fine
arts education issues in Florida.
Thank you,
James Perry

The artists will converge on DeBary Hall and paint outdoors throughout
DeBary. The public will be able to watch individual artists work 9 a.m.
- 3 p.m. each of the three days. Registration remains open for artists,
who should reserve space by calling DeBary Hall at (386) 668-3840 or
visiting www.i-p-a-p.com.
Plein air artwork will be on display at DeBary Hall Friday, September
15 - 30. A free wine and cheese reception from September 15, 5 - 7 p.m.,
will celebrate the new exhibit.
DeBary Hall was selected in part because of its Victorian Florida
buildings, such as the mansion, barn and ice house.
The event is supported by International Plein Air Painters, the DeBary
Art League, the National Women in the Arts and Group of 8.
Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for ages 5 - 12 and
free for youth under five.
Built in 1871 by Frederick DeBary, a New York wine merchant, DeBary
Hall is on the National Historic Register of Homes and is owned by the
state and managed by the Leisure Services Division of Volusia County. It
was a hunting retreat of a famous wine merchant, Frederick deBary, owner
of holdings along the St. Johns River. Most of the historic material in
DeBary Hall focuses on St. Johns River history. One of the rooms
contains an award-winning interactive exhibit.

Poteet Victory “Distinctive Light October 20 to November 26, 2006
Contemporary artist of Choctaw-Cherokee descent and pioneer of color field mysticism, Poteet studied at the New York Art Students League. Robert Kipniss “Invitation to the Light December 14, 2006 to January 21, 2007
Millenia Fine Art’s Opening Night for Robert Kipniss will follow one night after the Artist’s opening at the Orlando Museum of Art. Kipniss’ oil paintings seductively invite the viewer into a misty, forested world that may well be the visual representation of “the road not taken.

Richard Currier “Simple Complexity April 20 to May 25, 2007
“I paint until the objects become more than what they are, says Richard Currier. Indeed, his over-sized canvases exhibit a “simple complexity" in which a watermelon sitting on a table becomes much more than a simple piece of fruit. Educated at the Ringling School of Art, Currier has exhibited extensively and is honored to be in several museums and prestigious collections.

Unknown to him his young wife Agatha also happens secretly, but for different reasons, to be dining there. The consequences for this incorruptible pillar of Victorian society turn out to be both embarrassing and hilarious.

UPCOMING FIGURATIVE EXHIBITION AT ORMOND MEMORIAL ART MUSEUM AND GARDENS
Upcoming Sculpture Workshop
By Instructor Cedomir Djordjieski
Saturday, Sept. 16 & 23, 2006
12:00 noon * 3:00 pm
Monday * Friday 10:00 * 4:00 p.m. and Sat. & Sun. 12:00 * 4:00 p.m.,
September 15th * October 29, 2006. His two day workshop will include
instruction and guidance in the creation of a clay cast and plaster
sculpture. Material provided. Supply Fee include

Experience the Blue Ridge Mountains at the height of the fall season. Whether your interpretation is highly representational or virtually non-objective, this guided workshop exposes you to new possibilities while strengthening your abilities. Structured, shared challenges guide you through the study. Interactive critiques and discussion take place each day. Each room is unique, and there are a variety of offerings, from single and double rooms to shared suites.
Don't miss out! The deadline for reservations at the Monte Vista is August 22nd. After that date, there is no guarantee of a room at this hotel, and the fall season is very busy. The deadline for workshop fees is September 20th, but sign up now-- workshop space is limited to 10 people.

Thank you,
James Perry
